Enabling PHP 5.6

New domains added to Surftown's Linux hosting solutions will have PHP 5.6 enabled as default. If your account was created before 5.6 was used as default, then you can upgrade to 5.6 by following the steps below.

The most important changes between 5.4 and 5.6 are listed on these two pages:

Enabling PHP 5.6

In order to enable PHP 5.6 you need to modify your web site's .htaccess file. The file is usually in the root of your domain directory.

Modifying a .htaccess file in the root directory of the hosting account may affect all web sites on that account. It can, however, be overridden by other .htaccess files further down the directory structure.

The following string needs to be added to the top of your .htaccess file:

AddType application/x-httpd-php56 php

If you need IonCube loader, then use this string instead:

AddType application/x-httpd-fastphp php

Furthermore, you also need to remove or comment out any other AddType directives dealing with .php files.
